The menopause occurs when periods naturally stop, typically around the ages of 47 – 52, but this varies between individual women. As the menopause approaches, periods tend to become lighter, some periods may be missed and then they stop altogether. Not all women have menopausal symptoms, but any physical effects that are experienced are associated with oestrogen reduction. Common symptoms include; hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, headaches and weight gain.
Another common change during and after the menopause is a reduction in vaginal secretions, which can lead to vaginal dryness. This can cause difficulties and discomfort during sexual intercourse and women experiencing this generally benefit from using some additional lubrication during sex. This can be accessed for free as part of the Lanarkshire C Card Scheme.
