HIV PrEP

You can reduce the risk of HIV by taking Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) which is taken before sex.  PrEP is available in Scotland but not everyone is eligible to be prescribed it. If you think you have been exposed to HIV, for example having unprotected sex with someone who may be HIV positive, then you can reduce your risk of becoming infected by taking Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) which is a short course of tablets.

PEP can be taken up to 72 hours (3 days) after sexual exposure but is more likely to be effective within 24 hours (1 day), so it’s important to act very quickly. You can also be tested by your GP, by attending a clinic or accessing a home STI testing kits which are bookable online.
